Research in Distance Learning Music Education
SwarGram's distance learning courses are not
regular instruction CDs, the kind available readily in the market. These are
not one of the several software in the stores which allow you to play with a
few sounds in the name of education.
SwarGram's distance learning courses are a result of months of hard work by
the most qualified academics in Indian music. The people behind are renowned
music educators, scholars, innovators, technical experts and management
professionals. Valuable inputs have also come from psychologists and our
very own 'idea champions'. The team together produced a revolution of its
kind in the field of Indian music education. The outcome of this consortium
is a an education system through which one can learn Indian Classical Music
and Dance by self study supported by a strong faculty support.
We
present a few highlights of the research aspect of these courses.
- First challenge was
to co-relate Indian Classical Music, distance learning and technology.
Idea was to change the mind set of students and educate them that learning
music is actually possible with the help of structured education systems
with a dash of technology in place. We used analogies like - how much
modern communication developments and computing advancements have changed
our lifestyles. Communication is also an age-old art but we have adopted
these changes so naturally over a period. There's nothing like greeting
somebody in person with a hug, but still we all use flowers, greeting
cards and even electronic cards to pass on our emotions to a dear friends.
We at SwarGram also feel, that greeting a person with a hug is one of the
traditional methods and is perceived to be the most effective, but we also
believe that many a times an e-card with a great message and a lovely
graphic do stir up much deeper emotions. There are many things which we
can't express with a hug. Similarly Indian Classical Music is a
traditional art of India taught to students by traditional methods, but
there are many more methods through which this art can be taught and they
can even prove to be more efficient method in certain learning situations.
Indian classical music can be performed and heard in a traditional
setting, but the effect of the same music multiplies manifolds when it is
heard in an acoustically rich auditorium with the best sound reproduction
equipment like the Dolby surround. So the 'traditional' aspect of the art
form should only be related to the content and not the delivery part.
because the methods of delivery will change with time and for the good. If
the quality of content is maintained of traditional standards and
delivered through the best modern day innovations, the results will be
most satisfying. SWARGRAM'S COURSEWARE DELIVERS THE
TRADITIONAL EDUCATIONAL CONTENT CLUBBED WITH MODERN LOGICAL TEACHING
METHODS AND TECHNOLOGY AS DELIVERY VEHICLE.
-
Curriculum and
Delivery Methods: The next thing of foremost importance was to deliver
what we were actually promising. Then over two years beginning June of
1999, the SwarGram team developed unique methods of teaching based on the
psychology of learning, laying out very clear learning objectives,
designing exercises and self assessments systems, and student
learning routines. The system also included student-teacher interaction
and progress monitoring.
